    According to Holland's glossary of terms for dialectal Cheshire:

    guage bed: a salt-mining term. The solid bed formed in the shaft, where marl or rock are sound enough to form a foundation for the cylinders or lining of the shaft.

    I always thought it was guage (pronounced as gaje).  Gauge would be like gauze (goje)
