Answer  Every now and then, when I try opening an Excel file, I get a message saying that "Excel cannot open the file 'file.xlsx' because the file format or the file extension is not valid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file.

Can't open an Excel file with extension XLSX

Answer  How do I open this file that I have been using for months but now can't open? I get an error message that says "the file format or file extension is not valid". I did not consciously change the extension when I saved it.

Damaged Excel file

Answer  Today I cannot open several Excel files they all say cannot open the file because the file format or file extension is not valid. The files which do open all the tabs have disappeared except one which is full of garbage characters. The files that do open also say the data is delimited.
