On clicking a Word document, I get a pop-up that states 'product activation failed' change product key etc' - though the document eventually opens. I do have genuine Microsoft software installed on my laptop. This problem has started occurring since the last 3 weeks.

Have you checked the key with their on line system. Have you updated recently. First check the key is matched with your genuine product key.

Apparently Windows 8 comes with the product key embedded in the BIOS.

Can you elucidate on this plz?

    Thanks

    What changed 3 weeks ago?

Download Belarc Advisor and then run it. That will give you your product key.

3 weeks ago - The minute I clicked on a word document - it would take almost 45 seconds to open and along with it would appear a pop-up stating 'product activation failed' with 'change product key' at the right bottom corner; however the word document opened.
What irks is that I have to wait for so long and keep clicking 'okay' on the pop-up. The laptop too, takes a while to start.  At times gets 'hung' .  I will download Belarc Advisor.

    Thanks Charlie Brown.  Much appreciated.

I just checked with the HP guys - they've told me that Microsoft had installed a trial version and hence I have to approach Microsoft - what a mess.

As you mentioned, genuine product and assuming that this office product came pre-installed on your laptop. It seems that, something wrong with this product key, as you written 3 weeks ago, it was started very slow. However, don't go with Hp guys, better you can navigate here and check the product key: https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Find-your-Office-product-key-12a5763a-d45c-4685-8c95-a44500213759
and check with the tag like "office came pre-installed....."

Thanks. Will attempt this as well. It's getting way to irritating.

You could also try Open Office. It's open source code that will do just about everything Office does for free. For home users this is a great alternative to the pricey Office software.

I have seen the "free" version accidentally activated, rather than the version you have a legitimate product key for. Then the free trial runs out, and YOUR product key will not work. The solution is to remove the one that was already installed on your computer, which should then bring up the version that you paid licensing for.

Thank you all. I did connect with Microsoft US last night. Surprisingly through remote viewing, the person was unable to find the product key and has asked me to contact Microsoft Bangalore in India.
