Windows XP Home Edition defragging

I am unable to complete defragging on my computer while running Windows XP (HE). There no programs running in the background and a minimal number of (unnecessary)programs are running in the task tray. I've disabled my Panda Platinum Internet Security program and any applications running in the Task Manager's application menu. I've even attempted defragging in Windows XP's "Safe Mode" without success. My HDD is not "Full" with at least 40% hard drive space available. What could be my problem?

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

Have not had that problem but I usually run the program that deletes the unneeded files. Disk Cleanup first then the Defragmenter. Can you run the analyze portion? If not you either have a corrupted file or a virus. When did you last run a full virus scan?

What do you mean by can't complete. Does it stop with some sort of error message? Any events that you could report to describe the situation better?

I run (full scan) Panda Platinum Security 2005 (updated) and Anti-Spyware programs (updated) on a daily basis. I am virus and spyware free. Disk clean is run prior to Defrag. Defrag hangs up, after the analysis program runs, in the recommended-drive C:-should-be-defragged screen, clicking next or OK. CTRL+ALT+DEL (Task Manager) ends the Defrag Task (not responding)... Then, I'm free and clear back to normal desktop operation.

First check your hard drive for file errors: chkdsk c: /f. Reply with N to the following prompt: Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Chkdsk may run if this volume is dismounted first. ALL OPENED HANDLES TO THIS VOLUME WOULD THEN BE INVALID. Would you like to force a dismount on this volume? (Y/N) Reply with Y to the following prompt: Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N) If you have more than one hard drive, do this for each one. If defrag still will not run: Insert your WinXP installation CD and run SFC /scannow. SFC is the System File Checker. It will repair any Windows files have been corrupted or replaced by incorrect versions.
