Windows Explorer crashes when accessing files on phone.

I'm running 64-bit Windows 7 on my laptop while my LG Android phone is connected and noticing a problem I didn't have before with my phone, although it's been a long while since I connected it to my laptop (an older model M14 Alienware, if that's relevant). I'm trying to transfer some files from my phone to my laptop and I'm noticing that not only will Windows Explorer not let me access my destination but it exhibits some erratic ways of preventing from doing this; sometimes it freezes altogether, sometimes it shows the folder I want but says there's 0 (or a much smaller number than there is) files in it, sometimes it lets me get the folder I want but not access the file. In almost all these cases, I get a progress bar at the top that seems to indicate it has to load what's on my phone but it gets to a point where the bar just stays at a certain point and doesn't continue moving at all, much less reach the end. I've tried different means; importing through Windows Gallery AND Windows Explorer, etc. I have tried multiple USB cords, multiple PCs, updating drivers, anything else I thought of.
My laptop simply will not let me browse files on my phone (much less transfer them, which is what I'm trying to do) without freezing or locking up. What is going on?

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

I’ve experienced this problem with my Windows systems/phones and I’ve never been able to fully figure it out. I think it’s related to the USB ports and/or drivers. Sometimes rebooting helps. I’ve also seen that upgrading to the latest version of Windows is required. You might consider that as Windows 10 is much better with driver support and connectivity than Windows 7. Best of luck!

Have you tried to connect the phone to the PC through data cable in Safe mode? Please try the same thing in Safe mode & check if that helps. Also when connecting the phone with data cable is Windows 7 installed the driver ? Or shows any notification?

Moreover, is there a software/tool that you used for same purpose? If not, you can try to download/ install a third party tool (just for checking purpose) and try to connect the phone through this software/tool and check if that helps.

Are these file on your phones internal storage or on a SD Card in the phone? If they are on an SD card have you tried removing in and using an adapter try the card reader slot on your laptop? You may want to look at ES File Explorer

If the files are on the internal storage of the phone, you can move them to external storage/SD card and check if that helps. For moving files etc. please link here: https://www.verizonwireless.com/support/knowledge-base-210067/

However the LG phone model is slightly differ but hope the procedure is same and this may work.
