I noticed that Windows 8.1 isn't recognizing my DVD drive. When I put it in, the light flashes for a few seconds and that's it. I went into the Device Manager and reinstalled the DVD driver. That didn't work. What should I do?

You did not mention if this is a desktop unit or a laptop.
Is this an internal or external drive? If it’s external there may be an issues like a damaged USB port. You could try another port to see if that eliminates one possibility. If it’s a desktop it may be possible a cable has come lose or the drive has just failed. Some of the drives in older models I have found were not meant for heavy use.

Have you updated recently? Check either the CD/DVD drive is set as in pio fall-back mode. Rather it to be in dma mode. You can enable dma mode by opening device manager and select the ide ata/atapi controllers and select the first one (ata channel 0) then right click to open properties > advanced settings.

Also, you need to look and see if the DVD drive is being mis-recognized Go to file explorer and then manage.your PC. Once computer management is open, then go to storage management and look to see if the DVD drive is being recognized properly. If it is not, it may be conflicting with another drive. If that is the case, you can change the drive letter from this point in storage management. You can also investigate more drive problems here too.
