A couple of nights ago, I was running a bunch of jobs on my Windows 7 laptop. It was plugged in and the battery was at 100%. When I woke up, my computer went into sleep mode and none of the jobs finished. I was so annoyed. Why did my machine shut down? Is there a setting I have to check?

You did not mention, that erstwhile either you configured power options in control panel. If not, yes, you have to check the power options and make sure that is it set as balanced (recommended)/other power settings. And click the change plan settings & check all.
