My mother-in-law is not the most tech savvy person in the world so I'm trying to connect to her laptop from my home PC (we both have Windows 10). She sent me a message saying that her PC said that remote desktop was not available in her Windows 10 version. I don't want to pay for the upgrade - is there a workaround for this? Thanks!

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

Are you both on the same network? I’m guessing not. I think you’d be better off using LogMeIn or, perhaps, TeamViewer to connect to her computer. I believe the latter is free for non-commercial use.

At least once it is needed to gain the laptop physically by you (as your Mother in law is not tech savvy) and check the firewall settings. Allow remote desktop connection through the firewall.
Open Control panel, then Windows firewall & link on left "Allow apps to communicate through Windows firewall". Properly close all the windows. Or you can use Ammyy Admin (small tool) for remote computing. For personal use it is free and easy to connect. While this tool is necessary for both the systems. Installation is not needed.

Check remote Desktop and private / public as you see fit, then ok.

I've used both the ones mentioned by Kevin and I agree TeamViewer is my personal favorite solution as well.

Enable Remote Desktop for Windows 10 Pro. The RDP feature is disabled by default, and to turn the remote feature on, type: remote settings into the Cortana search box and select Allow remote access to your computer from the results at the top. System Properties will open the Remote tab.

It is necessary Windows remote feature is also enabled on your mother-in-law's system. Else only one side remote enabling does not mean to connect the other side system.
