I've been trying to shutdown my Windows 10 laptop for the past two days but it keeps saying that I have an app still open. But there's nothing open at all. This keeps happening. What can I do to stop this?

Try looking in the task manager and see what is running under the processes tab. If  you do not see anything you started still running, try clicking CPU column to see what is getting activity. You may find you have a phantom session of an app running. As a last resort you can always press and hold the power button to force a shutdown. Then try and boot your computer in safe mode and see what apps it is starting automatically.

One more thing, you can use msconfig/system configuration (built-in tool) to trace what programs/application are running at startup. On search bar, type msconfig and click Startup tab then check what applications are running under Startup Item. You can deselect the unnecessary apps or the apps that are no longer required and restart the system. Also for more better way, open services.msc and check what services are running on your system. But be careful, don't deselect the services which are marked as Microsoft services or related.

Another place to look for jobs that may be active that you are not aware of is the task bar. Check the icons for some apps you may be running in the background like Spotify, Outlook or an anti virus app.. You may have to display hidden icons depending on how you set your system up.
