So I've had a Western Digital external hard drive over the past few weeks. Whenever I plug it into my Windows 10 laptop, it automatically restarts (it's like it had a short circuit) and then everything is perfectly fine. This doesn't happen on any other device (just my laptop). How can I fix it?

Sounds strange for sure.. Have you checked out the boot sequence of your laptop using the BIOS? If the external HD is a bootable drive and your laptop is set to boot from the USB > CD/DVD > internal HD then that may be triggering the re-boot.

Have you checked to run the laptop in Safe mode after inserting the external HDD? You can try to uninstall USB drivers from Device Manager and restart to install them automatically by Windows.

Sometimes, bootable external HDD may cause the same issue, however this is rare. In that situation, you can disable USB boot from BIOS under boot sequence.

Also check virus for sure that this is not happened for virus activity.
