Hi, My 2 yr old Windows 8.1 Acer v3-571 i7 laptop isn't listed on Acer's list for notebooks supported for the Windows 10 upgrade. I can't get any response from them about this about what wouldn't work or why such a recent model isn't supported. Perhaps you can get an answer for me? But what is the problem with upgrading. What wouldn't work? Does it rule out the Windows 10 upgrade? Thanks.

Software/Hardware used:
acer v3-571 i7-intel 4000 / 8Gb Ram / 756Gb / 64bit / windows 8 upgraded to 8.1

Hopefully it is eligible for a free Windows 10 upgrade. There is no rule or else check the compatibility of your laptop. I think it will upgrade to win 10.

I've found Windows 10 compatibility to be hit or miss at best - lots of bugginess on some systems and works great on others. You may want to hold off for the first big update to Windows 10 that I believe is coming in October. Best of luck!

Thanks Kevin.  Yes, I'm not sure I will be upgrading at all but certainly wouldn't do it this year anyhow.
If Acer aren't going to provide drivers for win10 for this model then it's going to be very hit and miss and we're stuck if something doesn't work.

Just appalling from Acer to not support such a recent model and then not bother responding to customers questions either.  Have had 3 acers but no more.  They just lost a customer.

Check all patches/updates are Ok now! It certainly upgraded to Windows 10. But it must updates all security patches first.

well, created a small partition and installed win10 and works well. had to scavenge the realtek HD plus dolby driver from a supported acer model with a similar number but otherwise decent.

Edge is a resource hog, I'll ignore it and use FF/GC.

Next: sshd disk replacement?  And puppy linux on a usb.

There will always be systems that do not support a new version of Windows (or Linux or any OS) no matter how 'recent' it is. There's nothing appalling about it unless it's a regular and common circumstance across a vendor's product line. In this case, the Acer model was three years old when the version of Windows was released to the public.

A vendor is not obligated to make sure that a model will be compatible with some future OS that a different company is going to release. It might, however, be thought that Microsoft should do more to ensure that recent hardware is acceptable to run a new version of Windows on.

Of course, since MS has been working on wider acceptance of its own branded hardware, they might conceivably be less interested in the widest compatibility with competing hardware.
