So, here's the thing: My Windows 10 computer says the hard drive is full. But looking at the size of the folders, I should still have older half of my drive left. What is happening here?

Check to see if your hard drive has multiple partitions.

It may be that the drive partition (most likely C:) with your Win10 OS is on is full. You may have a D:, E: or F: drive with the empty space.
A lot of programs will create their own folder or install to the C: drive by default.
If you download a lot of files it may be that that folder should be changed to another drive.
You may also want to check your recycle bin if you have deleted a lot of files.. They may still be sitting there in case you wanted to recover them.

Have you checked with a good antivirus? Suspecting this can be happened due to virus activity. If there is an antivirus already installed, update with latest one/ patch and then run full scan. Also you can start the system in Safe mode and check if Windows 10 shows the same thing.

"But looking at the size of the folders..."

How are you doing the "looking"? What "folders" are you looking at? (All of them? Hidden folders?)
