Where should mail server go? Sub domain or own domain

Hey people, I'm kind of new to this so any help would be appreciated. I am currently setting up an email server running w2k server. We have a domain running Active Directory. My question is should I put the mail server as it's own domain, or should I put it under the current one? Also, how would I configure the regular domain server to direct itself to the mail server. I know the MX record needs to be added in DNS, but do I have to do a reverse lookup zone too?

    Please provide some more specifics like what email server is to be deployed, who will it service (LAN users or external users). Assuming this is for internal users as a publicly available email server and further assuming Exchange Server, you would make the email server a member of the current domain and not a child domain, participating in AD to have access to the directory where all your users likely are contained. By entering the AD it will automatically be registered with the domain server(s) so no "direction" of the latter is needed. Are you hosting your own public DNS or is your ISP the provider of your DNS entries? How many public IPs does your Internet connection provide? The MX records need to be entered into the global DNS, usually by whomever is hosting your DNS, and it should be a distinct public IP. As the other poster asked, if you have a firewall you will need to configure it to pass whichever ports you will be using to the new email server. Examples of ports are: POP3 - port 110 IMAP - port 143 SMTP - port 25 HTTP - port 80 Secure SMTP (SSMTP) - port 465 Secure IMAP (IMAP4-SSL) - port 585 IMAP4 over SSL (IMAPS) - port 993 Secure POP3 (SSL-POP) - port 995 That is plenty to get started with and then post follow-ups to this board.     The domain really is not that important as long as all the domains are in the same forest, there generally is no need to create a new domain for the server. but if you have a parent child setup.. I would put the new server in the parent domain if that one server needs serve all the domains in your forest. remember each user will need to authenticate to the server to get his mail. but it will work in any of the child domains as well. because of the trust relationships between the parent and the child domains. a reverse lookup is not required, but is helpful, and I would create it.

    Thanks for the fast replies. It will not be an exchange server but will be using a 3rd party such as Workgroup Mail or SurgeMail. And yes it will be an external server, but will only be used for employees.
