Before
we would want to give an answer to this, we would like to know do you have
a business case for asking this question or is it a homework question.

If you have a good business
case for it, please let us know. It is really not right for us to be doing
homework for people. It deprives them of the extra knowledge they get when
doing the research themselves.

Hi, I am just doing a bit of research on the OSI & TCP/IP model. I am looking just for a description of what they do in the transmission of data just so I understand what they do. Also, it's not homework I'm just trying to get as much information about this as I can.

what research have you done so far?

If you do some research and you are stuck on something technical that you cannot find an answer for somewhere else, please come back with specific questions.

From the research that I have found so far is as follows:

MAC Addressing in relation to transmission of data

Each device on a network has a unique number, usually called a hardware address or MAC address, that is used by the data link layer protocol to ensure that data intended for a specific machine gets to it properly.

Still looking for a good source of information on IP addressing in relation to transmission of data. I don't need a whole lot of information just enough so that I have an idea of what it does if you know what I mean. Thanks for the help in advance.

If you can search on the net, there are lots of replies on the same topic. You can choose from any one which one suits for your research.

The role of "IP addressing" is to determine where packets of data are to go in an internet structure. Note that it is important in "internet" communications rather than "network" communications. An "internet" refers to connections between "networks".

But many, many sites around the Internet will indicate that and are easy to find. If you haven't found what you're looking for, then something is missing from your question.

You should know that this isn't a training site nor one that supplies research answers. Either of those may need to be included as part of giving an answer to a technical IT problem when appropriate, but the problem solving is what fits here.

mac address is the hardware address and IP address is the network address without these two connection can not be implemented.
