Faced with IP address exhaustion and dealing with complex algorithms when dealing with mobile networks, IPv6 is being used to replace IPv4, the previous Internet Protocol standard. IPv6 differs from IPv4 in that it utilizes 128 bits for each address versus the 32 bits used in IPv4, thus allowing for significantly more addresses. IPv4 uses four 1 byte decimal numbers that are separated by a dot, while IPv6 utilizes hexadecimal numbers separated by colons. IPv6 also allows for larger payloads than IPv4 allows.
