    They refer to three sets of system programs that name, allocate, organize and access files on disk. They are types of 'file systems'.

    FAT, File Allocation Table, is an older file system from way back in PC history. FAT32 is a newer version that stores data in 32-byte chunks. NTFS, New Technology File System, is also a newer technology that came in 1993 with the release of Windows NT 3.1.
