Are you speaking about separator pages: Printer generated or AS/400 generated?

Separator pages have nothing to do with backup checkpoints.

The concepts are covered in many topics in the Information Center and can be located by searching. The Save-while-active concepts topic is a good start.

When using a save while active strategy the system needs to get an image of the objects that is in SYNC with all the objets in the SAVE-WHILE-ACTIVE group. For that processing needs to establish a CHECKPOINT at which time it has "frozen"  the state ofthose objects. This is the so called Synchronisation point. Updates to objects after the Check or Sync point are held in wait and applied as soon as the objects are saved.
