It is a high-speed storage area within CPU. All the data represents in a register before getting processed. In simple words, the numbers of registers that a CPU has and the size of each help to figure out the power and speed of a CPU. For an instance, 64-bit CPU in which each register is 64 bits wide and therefore each CPU instruction can operate 64 bits of data.
