Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

Put simply, a portable hotspot taps into 3G and/or 4G cellular networks, just like a smartphone does. Once it’s zeroed in on cellular data connection, a mobile hotspot can share that connection via Wi-Fi with nearby laptops, tablets, game consoles, or anything that can connect to a Wi-Fi network. So unless you want to support other devices from your phone, you should not need it.

Without hotspot/ wifi connection how do you connect? Is there Wifi on your iPhone? Are you roaming? If yes, have you proper connection while roaming?

Why do I need a hotspot on my iPhone...

You don't "need" one unless you want to use it.

Do you ever have other devices (laptop, tablet, etc.) that would use an Internet connection? A hotspot makes connections available using your phone's data limits.

Moreover, be cautious while using hotspot from other source. It is dangerous to use password less WiFi. This can be harmful for your personal data.

So it is best to use the hotspot on my own phone rather than a commercial location. Is that what you are saying?
