Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

Welcome to ITKE, seanman! An ISO file contains data from either a CD or DVD. These image files usually have the file extension of .ISO.

    ... in PC terms?

It doesn't stand for anything "in PC terms". It's just an extension.

What technical problem do you want help with?

Add your reply...ISO files, also called images, contain exact duplicates of CDs, DVDs or Blu-ray discs. An ISO file saves every piece of data -- even hidden files and boot information -- exactly as it appeared on the original disc, making ISOs the best way to fully copy one disc to another. If you have an ISO file on your hard drive you can also mount it, loading the file as if it were a physical disc.

The .ISO file extension could be a number of things, but mostly it's a DVD/CD image file.

An *.ISO is generally the file extension of an ISO9660 image file of a DVD/CD. Its depend upon the burning software, it might be an extension of  *.img, *.nrg, *.cif, *.bin, *.ccd or several others.

The ISO is "The International Organization for Standardization". It also has a French name and a Russian name. It is NOT The International Standards Organization. There is no such body. For those in the UK it does use the zee/zed spelling. It defines and ratifies international standards such as the format being discussed in this topic.
