What do DWL files do when they appear on screen?

I see these DWL files appear whenever I open AutoCAD dwg files. They look like ghosts on the display. What is their purpose and if I delete them, what happens?

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

The drawing lock file was created as a .DWL and then renamed to a DWK . And yes you can delete them. Deleting the .dwl file won’t affect the drawing.

The .dwl file(s) is/ are created by autocad when a drawing file is opened for editing. It is automatically deleted when the .dwg file is closed. However, you can not delete when the .dwg file is opened and .dwl file is associated with it.
