Hi, I am Ganesh and have an experience of 7 years in mainframe under application support and maintenance project. I got an offer to switch from mainframe to Nomad which is again a legacy tech. It is been widely spread that openings/opportunities in mainframes are lesser when your years of experience goes up. Being that, what is the best option - Switch over to a different technology, tools or Analyst or moving to management role? Please suggest me.

Software/Hardware used:
Mainframe - JCL,COBOL,DB2 and VSAM

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.
Some of the older IT tech is becoming outdated and jobs are getting harder to find. One area that will continue to grow is security and web based development. There are a few languages used here like Visual Basic, C#, JAVA, HTML5,PHP to name a few. As more of todays devices can connect to the internet they will need support and constant development as new tech becomes available.

Working on mainframe is a wider term. You need to be clear what exactly are you doing on mainframes. Whether it is backups or development or some other work. If development, you need not worry as the proficiency in one language can lead easily to another language widely in use. Moreover, staying in mainframe spectrum itself has its own charm and value irrespective of increasing number of years working in this area.

Are you still working in the same area that is in mainframe environment? You have 7 years experience and that is great. Who offered you for nomad? Is this offer from your present company? If yes, You can always say Yes. If this is offered from another company, then this is entirely depends on you. However age is a factor to switch over from known area to a new technology.

Thank you for the reply. My experience is in production support and maintenance. Resolving the abends and providing long term fixes. I can't find space to do the learning and inspire of that I got an offer from another company for the production support role in Nomad. I like to move on to d new role and also make some time to learn new languages/areas. I request your expert advice to uplift my career. Thank you again.

If you can cope up with this technology in this new environment (company), you can go for it. salary and your age both are factor in this case. If you are fully confident about this job, you can move.
