V5R4 IBM support

IBM iSeries
iseries v5r4
Hi all - does anyone know when IBM will cease to support V5R4 of the iSeries operating system?

Answer Wiki

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

IBM hasn’t announced a date for this yet. Based on past schedules, a release is usually supported for four to five years from its general availability date, or about a year from its end of marketing date. It depends too, on how frequent the releases are. Since V5R4 came out in February 2006, and its end of marketing date is January 2010, I’d guesstimate support won’t end until some time in 2011 or maybe even 2012.

See this life cycle of past releases for more information.

IBM's stated policy is to support the current and prior versions of the OS. When 6.2 hits the streets, expect support of V5R4 to be dropped before too long.

Unfortunately I'm not remembering where I read an article about this, but what I remember was, that IBM will support V5R4 until May this year.

I have the same information as YuVa47. I did research 4 or 5 months sgao because we are on V4R5 and need incentive for management to go to V7R1.

I just recently read and article that stated May of this year, as mentioned above. But that if enough AS400 shops scream that it may be extended.

As the IBM Upgrade Planning document in Cwc's answer shows, V5R4 will be supported for at least 12 months plus one day from today. There is no End-Of-Support date announced for V5R4 yet. Note 1 states:
    • End of program support date will be announced with at least 12 months notice prior to the effective termination date.
AFAIK, IBM hopes to have Version 8 (or perhaps 7.2) out in 2012. Tom

I thought marketing of 5.4 ended in May 2011?

I thought marketing of 5.4 ended in May 2011? Marketing, yes -- 05/27/2011 according to IBM's current schedule. As with most other vendors, IBM stops 'marketing' long before ending 'support. Just a minor shift in focus. Tom

IBM has announced that it is withdrawing service for the IBM i V5R4operating system as of September 30, 2013. As a result, it is recommended that end-users of the old iSeries, System i, and Power platforms with the legacy IBM i V5R4 OS migrate to the IBM Power7 platform and IBM i V6R1 or IBM i V7 operating systems prior to that deadline next year.

IBM is offering an additional discount for end-users to migrate to Power7, and the additional discount must be approved by IBM. Most, but not all, older systems will qualify for the discount.

Power7 systems have more computing horsepower than previous IBM servers. The system price includes three years of next-business-day hardware maintenance service. Power7’s cooling requirements and energy usage costs are significantly lower than older models.
