I'm thinking of upgrading my desktop from a 32-bit OS to a 64-bit. Is this an easy change to make? Would I have to change the processor too? I'm just trying to get some general information first before I make a decision. Thank you.

You would need a hardware upgrade of the processor. The system architecture is different. With a 64 bit system you can run 32 bit apps but you cannot run 64 bit apps on a 32 bit processor.

No, this is not an easy process. Generally, 64 bit version does not install on 32 bit processor/CPU. While it may possible to install 32-bit version on 64-bit processor. It is better to change the processor to 64 bit for getting more gain to operate your system.

Moreover, if this is your over budget, you can work with 32-bit CPU, while increase the RAM/HDD, but it is better to consult with a hardware technician who can help you.
