For one of our Microsoft Excel files, I use NOPI to open it and make changes. I also write it back to the disk. But for some reason, it says the file contains unreadable content. Afterwards, it questions if I want to recover the content of my file. What is going on? Can anyone help?

If you have doubt that file is corrupted, you can try with MS Office built-in repair toll to repair it. Or try to get the original file, if you have taken backup erstwhile. The repair process is here: https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Repair-a-corrupted-workbook-153a45f4-6cab-44b1-93ca-801ddcd4ea53

What type of changes are you making? The unreadable makes me think there is bad formatting / fonts / scripts / macros or something else Excel cannot recognize. Did you mean you are using NPOI?
Also what version of Excel are you running, it may be that you are not using a valid file extension.
