To open a .WAV file use a notepad or another text editor. Many files are text-only files meaning no matter the file extension, a text editor may be able to properly display the file’s contents.

Sounds like either the file is corrupted or it is not a .wav file that is compatible for MS media player. I would lean toward the corrupted file part.

Are you having problems with any other WAV files? Is this a file you created or downloaded? You may want to try and download it again. It may just have the wrong extension. You can also try another player like VLC. It might be a bad codec or some other format that is not supported.

There are several possibilities here. The most likely one is a corrupted Wav file, and Windows Media Player does not recognize it. You will also find that Windows Media Player does not recognize Blue Ray Files. Do you have another media player to try the file with to see if another player recognizes it like Quick Time. If not, you can attempt to redownload it and try with a new copy of it. If you have a Wav File Editor you can try opening it in that and see if you can edit out the bad spot. Lastly, you can go to Microsoft and see if they have updated codec that will recognize your wav file.

However, the chances are very few, but probably some codes might be missed other than file damaged.
