Two SQL (2005 and 2008) on the same machine.

We are planning to install some CRM software and it can only use 2005, however we will be upgrading to SQL 2008, is it possible to run 2 SQL versions (2005 and 2008) and is it a good idea from backup, maintenence and running. Will there be issues?

There is no problem running one instance of SQL Server 2005 and one instance of SQL Server 2008 on the same machine. My laptop has both running on it and has since Beta 3 or so of SQL Server 2008.

The only thing you will need to worry about is setting up each instance so that they have enough memory so that they do not battle for memory. Also make sure that your disks are fast enough to handle the load from both applications at the same time (just like you would if they were in the same instance).

    Hi. I already have one SQL 2005 Express edition running. I need to install SQL 2008 full version at the same time. Is it possible? There are ports conflicts? Any recomendation to do that concerning the way it authenticates (Express and Full Version) Thanks a lot.

    Yes you can do this with no problem. Just make sure that the instance name of the new instance is different than the instance name of the old instance, or SQL will upgrade the old instance. You set the instance name during the installation. Each instance will listen on a different port number. Windows Authentication is always the recommended method to use, however using SQL Authentication for the Application account is very common.

    Mr. Denny, When you said that "each instance will listen on a different port number" Could you please elaborate? Do you have to manually configure this to happen? Do you have to then modifiy the connections to the database to listen on this alternate port? (Rather than the default 1433) Thanks for your input.

    No you don't have to configure this to happen. By default named instances will select a random, un-used TCP port number to use. When you connect to a named instance the client automatically contacts the SQL Browser running on the server to and asks it what the TCP port is that the named instance is listening on. You don't have to do anything to make this happen, the SQL driver does all of this automatically.

    Mr. Denny, Is it acceptable to run SQL 2005 and SQL 2008 side-by-side on the same MS cluster (single-instance) cluster in production? At least temporarily until all SQL 2005 DB appl vendors are approved on SQL 2008. I know there were issues and recommendations to Not do this with SQL 2000 and 2005 because they were so different. Any issues we need to know about? Thank you! Lori
