Triggers are to track an event, Events in sense it refers to add/update/delete.
When ever u are performing such operations on a table we can track it or handle the event using triggers.
If you write the trigger, you're the one who knows what it's for. If not, then you have to ask the author. It's basically asking "What's the purpose of a program?" or even "What's the purpose of a program?"
There is a scope to the question, though. Any trigger purpose is limited in scope to activity (events) against the associated trigger file.
