Tablet touch screen no longer working

My tablet's touch screen (resistive?) had no problems for 1st 2 years. Lately, it will stop responding for varying amounts of time, including the power off message. It happens most often when I am playing a game. I removed unnecessary programs and files from the tablet, cleaned the surface, and used a new stylus. Now, I have been unable to turn it off for the past 2 hours. Can I cure this?

Software/Hardware used:
google nexus, second generation

You could try re-installing the operating system (if you know how to do it), but it could also be a hardware problem.

Best option might be taking it to a repair shop to get it checked.

"I have been unable to turn it off for the past 2 hours", if it is not possible to turn off, pull out the battery (if it is removable). Then again fix it. Now make a reset and you can overcome this issue. But be careful, detach SIM card / memory card (if any) before doing reset. Here is a good link: https://www.androidpit.com/how-to-reset-the-nexus-7-2013
However, you did not reveal what model is it. Though it works almost all model for resetting. If you are not comfortable, better carry it to a authorized service center.

Both my responses had no easy fix. I'm off to a repair person.

I've had similar issues. Had to press and hold power button to turn it off. What brand of tablet are you using?

    ToddN2000,
It's a google Nexus, 2nd gen. My tablet has now turned off, then turned on again, but the length of time it takes to recover is getting longer and longer. Yes, I have tried holding the power button for a longer period of time without any effect.
I have wondered if the "travel" power cord that I sometimes use to reach my chair while playing power hungry games can cause problems. Any comments.

Try for a hard reset, but before doing that, detach sim/memory card first. Now press & hold volume down& then press to hold power until the tablet turns on. You will see start. Now again press volume down twice to highlight recovery mode. Press power to confirm your selection. Again hold down power button & press then release volume up button once. Now select one which you desire.
