I think it's going to be more of the same, i.e.:
    • users making their own security decisions
    • policy documents existing for show with no substance
    • people purchasing technical security controls that address certain needs, often in a mediocre fashion
    • networks and applications that go untested - or under-tested - and remain vulnerable
    • resources spent on awareness and training "programs" that are of minimal value in the grand scheme of things
    • still not enough support from executive management
    • politicians trying to capitalize on it all with more "cybersecurity" regulations

I'm not trying to be negative. I've just been in this industry for so long I've seen the craziness that occurs every year due to people thinking the same way - or not thinking much at all - and expecting to see changes. No complaints from me as it's great for our profession. I just don't like seeing so much time, money, and effort being spent to only end up with minimal results.

Thanks Kevin, that's some great info. I think we probably need some professional figure to translate IT and Cyber Security issues in terms of their impact on the business' bottom line: that's the only language spoken by executives.

Indeed, alexdresn. Most problems in IT and information security come with hair on top. If you can master the people side of security, you can do just about anything! Lots more on this subject here:
