Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

Steps to test your modem to ensure it is working correctly :

  •     First you must locate which port your modem is currently using.
  •     You will need to begin from your computer’s desktop, the first screen you usually see when your computer has fully started.
  •     Click twice using the left hand mouse button whilst pointing at the ‘My Computer’ icon.
  •     Now double left click on the ‘Control Panel’ icon.
  •     Now double left click on the ‘Modems’ icon.
  •     This will give you a list of modems that you have installed on your computer.
  •     Click on the ‘Diagnostics’ tab at the top of the window.
  •     We can see the port ‘COM1’, and the modem that is next to it.
  •     You need to take a note of the number of the ‘COM’ port that your modem appears next to.
  •     Then click on the ‘OK’ button.
  •     You can also close the ‘Control Panel’ window.
  •     Now that we know which ‘COM’ port your modem is using, we are able to test your modem.
  •     Click on the ‘Start’ menu, and then click on ‘Run’.
  •     Now type into the white box next to the word ‘Open:’ hypertrm.exe, and click on the ‘OK’ button.
  •     You will now see the main Hyper Terminal screen, with ‘Connection Description’ at the top of the window.
  •     Type into the white box under the word ‘Name’ test, and click on the ‘OK’ button.
  •     Where you can see ‘Connect using’ click on the arrow at the end of the white box.
  •     Click on ‘Direct to Com’ with the number of the com port your modem is using, which you noted down earlier.
  •     Then click on the ‘OK’ button.
  •     You will now see a Port Settings window.
  •     Simply click on the ‘OK’ button, without changing any of the settings.
  •     You will now see the full Hyper Terminal window.
  •     Type ATZ and enter. You should be given a response of OK.
  •     If you do not see this, then the attempt to communicate with the modem has failed.
  •     Recheck you have the correct Com port.
  •     If you get the response ‘OK’ then type ATDT 0845 4551000 and enter.
  •     Your computer should start dialling (with some computers you will not hear it dialling).
  •     You should then see the window as follows.
  •     If this step fails, check the cable connections between your computer and phone line.
  •     Also check that you can dial this number from your phone line using a normal telephone.
  •     When prompted for ‘login:’ type in your Tesco internet access username and press the ‘enter’ key on your keyboard.
  •     You should now be asked for ‘password.
  •     Type your password and press the enter key.
  •     You should see the line ‘Exiting shell, and starting PPP session.
  •     This indicates that your modem has been able to successfully establish a connection.
  •     At this point your modem would normally hand over control to windows, however as windows is not being included in this manual connection it is unable to take over.
  •     You will continue to receive lines of jumbled text.
  •     Simply left click on the ‘Hang Up’ button at the top of the screen (the 4th icon from the left).
  •     Now close the Hyper Terminal window. You will be prompted to save this session.
  •     Click on the ‘No’ button.

If your modem failed the above test then you might need to contact the modem or computer manufacturer for further assistance.
