    The serial number isn't in software.

    And which "system name" are you asking about -- the one displayed on most system displays, e.g., DSPSYSSTS, or the TCP/IP host name? Since SNA has mostly gone away, I no longer know where the system name might be found. I'm not sure if it's in software anymore.

    In general, the serial number is a system value that may be retrieved with the RTVSYSVAL command for system value QSRLNBR. And system name is retrieved with the RTVNETA SYSNAME() parameter.

    We need to know what type of computer system you are referring to and What OS it has. Is this a main frame, mid range, i-Series, PC ? To many unknowns to give you an answer currently.

    For something like an AS/400 i-Series there are system values you query to get some of the info like 
    serial #  use command   DSPSYSVAL SYSVAL(QSRLNBR)
    to find system name & release use   DSPPTF
