SWAP continues to be in use when I have free RAM

I noticed that my system keeps using SWAP even though I have over 4 GB of free RAM. I thought SWAP is just for storage precautions when the RAM is completely full. Why does it keep doing this?

It doesn’t affect performance, but if you want to force it you can momentarily disable swap
sudo swapoff -a
sudo swapon -a
