Supply memory error on HP Laser Jet Pro MFP M477fnw How to fix? New 2nd party ink. Working great until today's HP Printer update. Now printer can not get working.

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

I know my HP printer checks for a QR code on the cartridge to check for a date. If it’s outdated the printer will not function with that ink cartridge. I bought a few HP when on a great  sale and had to throw some new ones away because I did not print enough to use them by the expiration date. Waste of money. If this is a secondary market cartridge that is just being refilled that may be the case.

What did it mean "new 2nd party ink"? Is it not original from HP? Perhaps, this 2nd party specific toner cartridge has a faulty/might missing memory chip. If you used cartridge other than HP, it is better to replace the cartridges with HP original suppliers. Turn the printer off & remove the toner cartridge. Again turn the printer on, then reinstall the cartridge in the correct slots (HP). If you do not know the procedure you can ask for an expert.

Used 2nd party ink. Worked for awhile until update. Not buying more HP ink. Just paid $380 for 4 large toners. HP would have been $518. Boycotting HP forever if I can not get new HP printer working. Bought a cheap Canon printer last night to fill the gap until HP realizes their mistake. Sold HP stock today too. Had for 12 years. I believe this will affect HP big time if they keep users hostage to use only their ink. Right now I have a $900 door stop. Sad..

Is there a way to salvage my HP printer without having to buy more "Blackmail" ink?

Try to swap the specific cartridge that the error refers to, with a different color cartridge (if any) to determine whether if the error is caused by the cartridge/the cartridge slot.

I too have bought my last HP printer. A few years back I bought an all in one printer. Did everything. The problem again is their ink management system. It had one large black and 5 smaller color. I figured great, I don't print a lot of color and it would be cheaper to replace one of the smaller colored ink carts. The problem I ran into is my colored ink expired and the printer would not even let me print a black only text document. Printer kept erroring on the power on display saying "color cartridge was out dated , replace it: Well I'm not going to buy a color ink so I can print black text documents... Does not make sense... That was the last straw for me..

Good to hear I am not alone. $900 loss is hard to take. For $300 or so, I can simply buy new HP ink and my printer would work fine. That's their plan. There should be a law for the sales people that sell HP printers that should warn buyers that HP will only take HP ink and inform cost of ink. Waiting for explanation and apology/excuse/update from HP for this. My NEW $500 printer and new $380 ink is now worthless right now. Tough pill to swallow. I just can't fall for HP's blackmail. It will catch up to them. We are the little people but word will eventually get out. Next is the BBB and social media. Again sad for HP's greed.

I read at the HP site that HP has changed bios in some of the printers for this issue.  I have several HP Printers and they all know that I am using third party cartridges in these printers.  You might go to the HP site and see if you can get an updated bios for the printers to get past this issue.

You can try to invoke HP official website, and try for firmware update (printer), if available, (just a try). May be this can helpful for that time. Please link here for HP support: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c02919168

Trying to change Firmware Datecode with no success. New HP Printer still worthless to me. Hopefully, HP will assist in unlocking "Supply Memory Error" to allow using non HP Ink. Doesn't seem legal to allow this to go on. I guess the big Companies keep them going. I now have a $900.00 door stop with this new Pro MFP M477fnw HP printer and 4 new large size ink cartridges that worked fine for about 2 weeks and less than 100 copies. Both visits to Office Depot and Best Buy with my HP printer stated the only way to get printer to work again is to buy HP ink. (Actual test at Office Depot with HP Ink did work right away). My cheap NEW $380.00 ink cartridge set is worthless since the recent HP Printer update. I am being forced to purchased the small HP toners for about $320.00 to get the printer working again. I can not be alone with this. I wish HP would eventually do the right thing. Alex with the HP Service Center told me on May 2, 2018 that the HP Printer Update erased the printer memory and the printer CANNOT work without HP Ink. No apology; just told me to go out and buy 4 new HP toners.

Try filing a formal complaint with the BBB.org.. You may have to log it against the corporate office or the office you called and got not satisfaction. I have done it for a few other companies and have gotten results.. It's worth a shot.  Even if they do nothing it stays as a negative on the companies profile.
