You could save your documents on another device, either a cloud that is managed by a third party, or one that you have created in your home environment. Myself, I never save any documents on the drive where the OS is in the event of a crash. I have an extra HDD in my computer at work and home. I also have a cloud at home in which I save all of my college homework, projects, photos and movies.
Long story short, go out and purchase a cloud device for your home. They are now cheaper than they used to be and very easy to set up.
