Recently, I got a Windows 7 PC from a friend that has an existing instance of SQL Express 2008. I already have local administration rights but I don't know the SA password. So I can't create databases or modify the password. How can I get SYSAdmin privileges? I tried using SSMS but it didn't work. Can anyone help?

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

The SA password is encrypted and stored in the master.mdf database file. You can use the third-party software – SQL Server Password Changer, which can help you reset the sa password without knowing the old password.

You got this from a friend? Why did he not clear his databases or remove the program. Most likely these databases are not going to be of any use to you?

You might be better off removing it and installing a clean version. This way you can set it up for your needs.
