I have an Masters degree in accounting and have been working in the field for 30 years. I am interested in learning SQL and want to know what type of career path would make a good fit for me. SQL developer? SQL administrator? (I do not know any other programming languages.) My ultimate goal is to find a remote SQL position, utilizing my accounting knowledge as well. Thanks!

Hi Imcole,

I believe that you have a good experience/ knowledge of accounting, why you are planning to switch to an entirely new field, is it requirement? I suggest you to stick with what you have, on the other hand learning SQL and utilizing your accounting knowledge in that entirely depends on the business requirements. SQL has nothing to do with your accounting knowledge.

While you are working in a accounting area and so strange it is about 30 years. So why did you think to change your area to IT related field? Is there any problem raised that is a cause behind this issue? I am not discouraging you, but both the fields are different. Probably you may handle some kind of accounting software, and if it is yes, then writing query is not so easy. However if you are very interested to learn, you can enroll yourself in a good institute for basic SQL writing and then you can go for certification. But it is recommended that, you keep yourself in accounting field, and if possible, do further higher certification on accounting.

If you are looking to get into IT after that length of time it may be hard to find a position that is strictly SQL. You may want to look into some SAP course, I think they may be a better fit for you with your current background.
