Why can't I shut down?

If it’s a PC, and nothing is working, press and hold the power button till it powers off. You will get a message when you re-boot that it did not shutdown properly and give you a few options as tho how you want to restart.

    What O/S are you running? XP and Vista has some huge issues with some of the software packages that ran in background not closing when told to. Causing the system to hang in the shutdown and not shutdown. There are times when it might and I repeat might tell you about it and even tell you which ones, but I usually had to go into task manager and figure it out.
