My friend and I have been building our own home server that's going to be based off on Ubuntu with four different drives in RAID 10. It's going to be used for backup and NAS. But here's our big question: Should we build a NAS Server with a single Gigabit NIC? Thank you for your help.

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

Whether to use a 1Gig NIC or a 10GigE NIC really depends on the switching capability of the network you plan to connect your new NAS to. Obviously, if your network is 1Gig, there wouldn’t be any benefit to having a 10Gig interface on your NAS box. Conversely, if you’re already running 10GigE (or plan to) go ahead and make the investment in the 10GigE NIC–you can probably find one for ~$200. If you opt for 1Gig, you should consider adding a second NIC for redundancy–they’re extremely cheap now–you can get a name brand card for $30 or so (or even less.)

Why are you thinking about needing 2 NICs?

Speed-wise, 1 NIC would be more than enough for the speed your disks could handle.
