Should I use FreeNAS or OpenFiler on a Mac OSX environment?

I need a better way to store my photos on my Macbook Pro. I currently have 6 external drives that are connected via a USB2 (they're divided into pairs - one is the copy of the other synced manually with rsync). But that's slow. I'm thinking of building a NAS box so I can consolidate my photo library to one central location. I'm thinking of using FreeNAS but I'm not sure of other options. What about OpenFiler? If not, what file system should I use?
