Hello guys, so reading through a bunch of posts and google searches. Am I correct in understanding that the AS/400 system cannot run an FTP to connect to SFTP without any 3rd party add-ons? I really appreciate the help!

We use sFTP on the iSeries to transfer data to and from a number of vendors & there are no 3rd party add-ons involved.

Not that I am aware of. We use it here as well.

Hmm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I type in FTP type on the command line type in the IP for the remote host and I get No response from remote host. I can connect to the server using winscp so I know that it is up and running but IBM seems to have issues connecting it.

    sFTP is run from QOpenSys.

With the FTP command you can, if you have an SSL certificate loaded on your system, do secure FTP:
    FTP INTNETADR('10.11.12.13')
        SECCNN(*SSL)

I used this article as a guide to setting up sFTP keys & communications.

We use a command like this to communicate with our bank which employs a digital certificate:
    FTP      RMTSYS(Yourbank.COM) PORT(21)  SECCNN(*SSL)
                                                DTAPROT(*DFT)

WinSCP is a multi-protocol client that can connect to a few different types of servers. Although it's originally intended for scp or sftp connections, it can also connect to FTP servers.

The IBM i FTP command connects only to FTP servers.

If you want to connect to a server, you should first determine what type of server it is. Then use the appropriate IBM i command to make that connection. It seems pretty certain that the problem server in your case is not a FTP server.

Note that you might need to install the appropriate IBM i product set.
