Securely accepting credit card payments face-to-face?

I've been tasked with finding a low-overhead way of taking credit cards for a one-time event. Most people are hopefully paying in advance via PayPal, and I'm wondering if anyone has tried just setting up a laptop (monitored by an employee) to take credit card payments in person before?
Any other suggestions? I know there's machines we could buy, but we had one that was used once a year until it broke, and management decided it wasn't worth the investment.

We had a fairly simple call-in system that we used for the rare occasions that we needed to accept them. Not sure if that is a universal offering, but it was quick to set up, with very low cost involved. Here is a site with plenty of information on credit card processing services – hope it helps!
