How can we improve our school internet connectivity? We have around 400+ students and during high traffic days, our internet connectivity comes to a halt. We don't have enterprise level routers, just home networking routers: Asus, RT-AC68p, Netgear r7000, another Asus and Linksys routers spread out around the building.

Thank you very much for your quick reply.

    agoussec: Increase router bandwdth threshold.

My Question: Sorry I am not an Sysadmin but how I do that?

    agoussec : Change your router

My Question: Asus and Netgear are the latest router models. Do you mean I need to change to enterprise level routers or different model? Please clarify.

Subhendu Sen: check if any student use of internet connection like streaming websites such as youtube/ other movie or gaming web sites.

My Question: Do you think I need a controller to monitor? What tools are available for monitoring.

    Other thoughts:

My previous church updated their network by installing Cisco controller and OpenMesh access points. It worked great as I remember. How I can replicate same settings at my school. I want to hardwire the faculty and staff and open the wifi for the rest.

Ask the people at your church what they did and how much it cost. Great to get 1st hand experience in your local area,

Hello Charlie, thank you for your reply. Cisco employees volunteered and donated their equipment to the church. If I am not mistaken only $1500 was spent to upgrade the network with all switches, cables, POE equipment, controller, and APs. If I do the same with Cisco it would be probably 10 times more expensive or even more.

OK, you have a starting point.

    First, what is your budget?

Next try to contact someone involved in the church project and see if you can get an estimate from the Cisco guys. You may not need everything the church received from Cisco. Get a written estimate of what they will do the fix you up. Now, you can see if that is doable.

the quickest, easiest way - log into the admin page of each of your routers and block streaming sites like youtube, Pandora, Netflix, hulu etc. also block facebook.com

all these home routers can easily block the sites. you will see a huge increase in performance.

also, what kind of ISP connection do you have? if your staff and students are doing only legitimate internet activities and still have performance issues, you may need to upgrade your ISP connection.
