How do I save comp progs to External drive? I would like to save every program on my computer TO my external, and not to have them be saved ON the computer. Possible? I am using a HP 5700 Small Form Factor machine (62 GB) and would like to, again, save my programs to my ED (929 GB). Thanks.

You can copy/write all of your programs to an external CD/DVD and after that you can erase the programs from HDD. However, it depends to run on what type of software/programs.

Use the Save As option, when the location pop-up, click on the links until you find the external drive, create a folder, and then save it

Thank you for answering. However, do you always get an option as to where programs go, or do they always go to the C drive?

    Copy/Write?
    Save as?

    I think I'm missing something.

A program is usually not a single file you can copy or move and will work magically from any location.

If the setup process lets you choose the location when you are installing the program, it will be easy.  Otherwise, you could "hack" things to make it work from other locations, but it might not be something easy to do, depending on the specific program you are moving.

There are millions of possible applications/programs you could have on your machine, so there is no way to tell if you will "always" be able to choose the location.

You can save them but you may not be able to run them from the external device. The reason is the path for program features and data may no longer be valid.

Moved here from the Answer Wiki, as it is not really an answer to the question.

Another thing to consider. Moving everything to the external HD will cause a good performance hit. This is because of the transfer rates of the information from the external drive are much slower.
