    You could use another editor. 
    try libreoffice if you want a replacement. 
    Wordpad handles rtf files even. 

    notepad++ shoudl do a job for you

    I prefer notepad++ myself. It's a very nice free piece of software. Have yet to have a problem. Just curious, what is the size or the RTF file you are trying to open?
