How do I remove a symbol that automatically appears in Word?

What symbol are you referring to ? You can set up that as an auto-correct option

Click File > Options > Proofing > AutoCorrect
Options

Then select PROOFING and set you replacement for the symbol under auto correct options.

    Probably you are asking for removing paragraph marks/symbols on word document. Sometimes this is really irritating. If this is the case, try this trick, open the file in word, click file menu. Click options at the bottom of the file pane. A pop up word options appears. Now click the display button on the top left side of the word options. Click the box next to paragraph marks to remove the check from the box. Next click OK to save changes. However the options/appearance may vary and depend on word version.

    If neither work for you, let us know what character /symbol you are trying to replace, There is always the find/replace option. Click the replace in the ribbon, then open it up by clicking the more button. At the bottom, click the SPECIAL or FORMAT for replacing select special char/symbols.
