Is real-time posting possible with AS/400. If it is possible, what will be required to migrate from batch posting to real time posting. Any help? (Note: I have no knowledge with AS/400 but I have been asked to look at how this will work, as such any response should be as simple, and devoid of technicalities, as possible, please).

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

It all depends on your software and how you have it set. Some will take a days transaction and save the data to a work file for end-of-day processing. Other applications may process the transaction immediately. Not knowing what type of transaction posting you may be referring to and what financial software you are using we can only provide general information.

Here is an example which may help:
We have multiple plants running a PC-based application which generates a label for every pallet of wood panels which comes down the production line.  When the operator creates the label this plant floor system sends a record to a file on the AS/400.  The AS/400 runs a job in batch which is waiting for data to land in the file.  When it detects this condition, the program wakes up and processes the record which updates various files on the AS/400, after which it returns to a wait status until the next record(s) arrive. This feature of waiting for data to land in a file is a standard part of the AS/400 - it is nothing special we created. It is called an end-of-file wait.

Thanks for your response. We wish to migrate from the current system which takes a days transactions and save the data to a work file for end-of-day processing (in batches) TO a system that enables the immediate processing of transactions so that the database can be updated immediately. We are using the AS/400 system (known to us as Bastion). I hope this explanation helps.

We modified an overnight batch update process to trickle-feed transactions as they happen. Instead of showing sales as at close of trade yesterday, we can show today's sales so far. Next we had to work out how to get head office staff to go back to work instead of watching the sales screen tick over. (a 30-second delay did the trick)
