What type of devices are we talking, computer, radio, walkie-talkie?  Half duplex means communication is allowed one way at a time. One that communication ends from device one,  then communication can begin the other way from device two. Range will be dependent on the type of hardware.

Half duplex system is usually used to conserve bandwidth while only a single communication channel is needed. A walkie-talkie requires only a single frequency for bidirectional communication so this an example of this system, while a mobile phone which is a full-duplex device, requires two frequencies to carry the two simultaneous voice channels. this communication can be firmly controlled by hardware so range/ distance depends on types of hardware.
