What do you mean by "protect myself"?

What exactly do you want to protect? A networking device, an application server? a web server?  something else?

Sounds like a homework issue. Can you be more specific as to your current set-up? Personal / corporate / network? There are many products out there that can help mitigate the issue. Some are free and good for personal use but if it's your business then you may want paid products. What security apps are you currently running?
