Problem Logging on.

Hi All We have a laptop at our office that some one has brought in for us to have a look at. Its a compaq 2.00 GHz pentium 4 running windows 2000 pro service pack 4. What it is its when some one tries to log on they get an error message of "Unable to log on because the netlogon service is not running on this machine". I can log on localy no problem its only on the network. When i go to services, the service netlogon is not there. When i try to take the laptop out of the domain I get the folowing error "The following error occured attempting to unjoin the domain "DOMAIN NAME" the specified service does not exist as an installed service." I was wondering if there was a way of starting this service, resolving this problem and some one telling me how this might have happened for future refernce. If any could help it would be much appreciated!! Thanks!!!

Try running a ‘repair’ using the original installation CD. You do this just as if you were installing the OS new but select ‘Repair’ from the second prompt where it asks what type of install you want to perform.

Doing this will re-install the entire OS including networking components, without damaging applications or stored data on the disk. This should resolve your missing NetLogon service problem.

Good Luck!

I posted this question then a little while l8r i figured it out. I uninstalled the MS Client then re-installed it, you have to manully restart the net logon service, then took it out of the domain then added it back to the domain and it works fine.

    1. Run Registry Editor (regedit). 2. Locate the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/Netlogon/ 3. Double click the DependOnService value. 4. Add the following strings on separate lines, and then click OK: LanmanServer LanmanWorkstation 5. Quit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer. The Netlogon service must start now, hopefully...

Perform these two steps for joining your domain and netlogon service. 1. In the Lan networking, Goto WINS and Add your server IP. 2. In the Host file, make your server enter. for eg. Server = ABC and IP= then entry is going to be something like this: ABC
